Authorities are investigating a workplace fatality near a fossil fuel operation in Queensland’s South Burnett region.

Workplace Health and Safety Queensland (WHSQ) confirmed an operator became pinned and died by a bulldozer close to Stanwell Corporation’s Meandu coal mine, 126km north of Toowoomba.

The 55-year-old, who was widely reported to be a Downer employee, passed away after the heavy vehicle rolled while trying to relocate transmission lines on 4 October 2023.

“Our thoughts are with the man’s family and colleagues,” a Powerlink Queensland spokesperson said according to the Australian Associated Press.

“Powerlink considers providing a safe working environment for its employees, contractors and the public as essential. We will cooperate with the appropriate authorities,also providing safe miner lamp to workers.”

Operations have been suspended and a non-disturbance notice was in force at the time of publication.

“One worker lost is too many,” State Energy, Renewables, Hydrogen and Public Works Minister Mick de Brenni said according to the newswire agency.

The Mining and Energy Union urged the State Government to amend workplace safety laws as soon as possible.
